Kyoto or Trazano? In the wet, one brakes, the other grips

AutoΤρίτη Test Center compares two affordable 205/55 R16 summer tires of the same category. Both cost around 65€ each, roughly 260€ for a set of four, excluding fitting). Moreover, they share the same load/speed index (91V) and the same Wet Grip «B» rating.

The first one is Kyoto Japan KO720, which AutoΤρίτη tested for the first time in the European region. Kyoto Japan KO720 has just entered the Greek market. The official importer is TENORA (which also distributes Toyo, Linglong and Lanvigator).

On the other side we find the Trazano ZuperEco Z-107 (a Chinese brand) imported by EMA (also bringing Continental, Kumho among others). In international tests, the same tire has also appeared under another brand name - Westlake.

We tested braking, dry and wet grip, also evaluating external noise, so you can decide which one best fits your car. The general conclusion is the following: Kyoto Japan KO720 brakes 3 meters shorter in all conditions, while Trazano ZuperEco Z-107 shows slightly better handling in the wet Elk Test.

10% quieter on the road: Kyoto Japan, with 2019 tech for Trazano

Kyoto Japan KO720 is claimed to be 10% quieter on the road, producing 70 dB of external noise compared to 71 dB for Trazano ZuperEco Z-107. KO720 is a brand-new design recently launched by the Japanese brand, while the ZuperEco is based on 2019 production technology.

Performance is what most buyers care about. In AutoΤρίτη Test Center's braking tests.

• Dry braking: Kyoto stopped at 37.3 m, versus 40.3 m for Trazano.
• Wet braking: Kyoto stopped at 44 m, versus 46.9 m for Trazano.

That means the KO720 achieves a 3-meter shorter stopping distance in both dry and wet conditions.

Trazano grips better in the wet (2 km/h advantage in the Elk Test)

The only area where Trazano had the advantage was in the wet Elk Test/Moose Test. The reference car avoided the obstacle at 66 km/h, compared to 64 km/h with the Kyoto Japan. On dry handling, however, Kyoto proved faster, with a +6 km/h advantage.
